Is Your AC Ready for a Refrigerant Change? What Homeowners Need to Know in 2025

Is Your AC Ready for a Refrigerant Change? What Homeowners Need to Know in 2025

Big changes are coming to the HVAC industry this year, and they could affect your air conditioning system. Especially if your home has a mix of older and newer units. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring a switch to a new, more environmentally friendly refrigerant, and that means homeowners need to start planning ahead.

The experts at Armstrong Comfort Solutions are here to teach you more about how this change could impact your home cooling system and what steps you can take to stay ahead of potential issues.

Why Is This Refrigerant Change Happening?

The current standard refrigerant, R410A, is being phased out. While systems that use R410A can still be installed in 2025, this is only a temporary solution. As inventory runs out and production stops, it will become harder to find compatible parts. Some older systems, especially those 20 years or older, still run on R22, which has already been phased out. Now, we’re transitioning to R454B, a refrigerant that’s significantly more environmentally friendly.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners?

If you're planning to install a new AC unit this year, you may still have a choice between systems that use R410A and those that use R454B. But that window is closing quickly. As of January 1st, manufacturers can no longer produce equipment that uses R410A, but there's still some stock available. Armstrong Comfort Solutions can install that equipment and handle smaller repairs if parts are available. But if you have a refrigerant leak, and if a replacement condenser or coil is unavailable, you’ll likely be looking at a full system replacement. And for homeowners with older systems, now is the time to seriously consider an upgrade.

Why Waiting Could Cost You More

Installing a system that uses R454B typically requires replacing the entire HVAC setup, including the furnace, because all components must be compatible. That makes it a bigger and more expensive job than replacing just one piece of equipment. On the other hand, if you act now, you may still be able to install R410A equipment and only replace the parts you need, potentially saving thousands. If you had a leak or needed a refrigerant recharge last year, you might’ve gotten by with a minor repair. Next year, that same issue could mean replacing the whole system.

What Should You Do Now?

The best thing you can do is schedule a maintenance visit early. If you have an aging AC unit or suspect a problem, now is the time to talk to an HVAC professional. Acting before there is a problem with your system can save you from costlier repairs, or full replacements, down the road.
